The EVIL truth:

Conclusion:

I know it’s a bit of a non answer, but there are really no clear winners or losers here.  The decision as to which EVIL or CSC camera is best for you will come down to what you’re after and that might be completely different from what I’m after.  If you want the best portable landscape camera it’s probably the sony with their amazing 10-18mm.  If that’s not it, an olympus with the 7-14mm wins (but filters won’t be cheap or easy).  If you want fast primes, the olympus wins again unless you want one single prime and then the fuji wins if you want that around 35mm.  But again, the X100s needs to fix the issues with the focusing system on the X100, both speed, accuracy AND the macro issue.  If you’re replacing a DSLR with a CSC, the sony or olympus win.  If you’re on a budget then look at panasonic, but only if you do NOT need auto ISO.  If you’re a photographer with a big old DSLR for work, then the Fuji is an amazing option in terms of a non-work camera to capture life.  For me, that’s the winner and for that reason.  When I’m working I’ll deal with “dragging” my DSLR with me.  But when I’m not working I don’t want to carry more lenses or bags or anything other than ONE camera and ONE lens.  And I want it to be easy and or mindless to control so auto ISO is a must for me.  Sweep pano is nice (so that one lens is effectively wider when needed) as is in camera RAW processing so I can share on social media when I want.

For these reasons the X100s looks to be the winner for me and the X100 was still the most used camera in the test even though it’s AF and macro issues annoyed me, the rest of it’s pros won me over as did it’s looks.  I’ve got an X100s on preorder and I’m anxiously awaiting it’s arrival so I can put it through it’s paces.  Hopefully it’s my answer and I can just move on with shooting family images w/o worrying about lenses (sony), focus (fuji), auto ISO (panasonic) or not loving the size/layout/feel of the camera (MFT).

Hopefully this review has helped you figure out what you need in your EVIL/CSC system and which system fits those needs best.  I’ve been a fan of these cameras for a long time and they’re only getting better with each new option as they’re available.

  1. Hi, have you heard of this material called “sugru” ? I’ve seen a post in a photography forum indicating it could be used to make custom grips for cameras.

    • not sure what you’re trying to say there exactly Nick. What I found is the olympus focuses much faster. The panasonic is/was a great lens though, so if size is more important to you or AF speed isn’t crucial it could be the right lens for you. Personally I prefer the slightly wider 35mm EFOV on the olympus and the AF speed is very important considering I shoot kids more often than not…
      Good Luck!
      Ben
