Iceland 2017

Day 2

Day 2 started at Gljúfrafoss.  We drove over to Seljalandsfoss which is right next door but on the way out of the campsite.  Seljalandsfoss is the famous walk behind waterfall which the kids loved but they got cold quick (even in warm clothes)!

From there we headed off to Skogafoss.  Skogafoss was a nice hike for us as we climbed all the way to the top platform.  One disappointment was that the midway path to the “troll” face is now roped off.  From Skogafoss we drove over to the very secluded Kvernufoss which the kids LOVED as we once again had it all to ourselves.  Much like last year there was a group in there who were leaving as we arrived, we had it to ourselves for ~45 minutes, then as we left a wedding was actually coming in!

From there we headed off to Sólheimajökull Glacier which is a short drive (and a fun awesome windy road!) off route 1 that’s well worth the view.  You can hike in and get on the glacier if you’d like (get a guide) but we opted not to with the kids.  The view alone is worth it and there’s a small restaurant there with hot dogs (of course).

It was then off to Dyrhólaey to see the puffins!  Last year it almost felt like work to see them, this year not so much!  We arrived and instantly saw puffins ~50′ away on the bluff.  As we were looking at them I happened to notice one AT OUR FEET less than 5′ away!  This was amazing!

After Dyrhólaey we were off to Fjaðrárgljúfur which is a crazy/cool/interesting canyon.  Last year we only had time to stop and see it from the bottom but couldn’t hike to the top.  This year we took the time to hike in and it was well worth it.  It’s  a beautiful location!

After Fjaðrárgljúfur we headed to Kirkjubaejarklaustur for the night.  We hit up the local pool which had probably the smallest slide of the trip (so it was good it was early in the trip!).  The kids still had a blast and Nikki and I were the hit of the adult’s hot tub group once everyone switched to English and started asking us questions.  We headed off to the campground and had a lovely site with a ridge behind us that our kids and some local kids climbed after dinner!
