Canon powershot V1, a photographers review:

V1 vs NEX5t:

  • V1 Cons:
  • V1 is “smaller” but still a brick
  • No not great sun stars with V1
  • V1 is $900…
  • V1 is ugliest camera by a long shot…
  • V1 has full articulating screen -vs- flip up
  • V1 is not as wide
  • V1 is noisier and has less DR?
  • V1 no auto MS ES shutter option?  Run out of shutter speed and it is just overcooked -vs- an option to auto switch to ES to save a shot…
  • Screen doesn’t come forward enough in selfie mode, goes to 160 degrees?….
  • ND needs to be auto
  • mechanical/electrical shutter switch needs to be auto for bright light wide aperture

V1 Pros:

  • V1 is power button (doesn’t get switched in pocket)
  • V1 has lens cap built in
  • V1 is smaller and lighter
  • V1 has longer range AND a crop mode for even more reach
  • More MP but smaller sensor, feels like more resolution (but less DR more noise)
  • No options/choices, just take it with only lens and go shoot
  • Much better video if needed
  • Good batteries in cold?
  • love push button on actually (I thought I’d hate it) doesn’t turn on in pocket (saving the lens)
  • less “hard” settings/dials means less gets changed when off in my pocket (a X70 problem)

V1 needs to have push button crop/zoom or even digital zoom via rocker switch in photo mode.  Give me 65:24 crop mode!!! Auto ND.  Auto electronic shutter/combo M&E shutter mode.  Push button crop/aspect mode stuck in 1:1 for aspect mode?  Make this JUST crop mode it possible or at least control the aspect ratio it gives me.

NEX5t pros

  • Cheaper
  • Smaller body
  • APS-C better DR/Noise
  • IQ has been great all winter…

NEX5t cons:

  • Poor battery life
  • Best small APS-C with wide option but still “bigger” (shorter and smaller body, bigger lens)
  • heavier

Overall the V1 has become my pocket camera of choice.  Some will say it’s not pocketable but for me that means coat pocketable.  It goes skiing with me every day.  I travels with me in the car’s center console all summer long.  Sure I wish it was smaller and more photo centric, but even as it is (with ventilation and a fan) it’s still the smallest package with a wide angle zoom available and for me that’s as good as it gets.
