Around the island race

img_9053-copy-sc.jpg

I guess summer’s over.  Today was the Conanicut Yacht Club’s annual around Jamestown race.  It’s always the one last race of the summer.  We were going to go in the little boat but couldn’t as it’s repairs aren’t quite done yet.  So we decided to take the big boat which was actually a ton of fun as we had some family friends along as well as my wife who brought our son Elias for his first ever sail at 2 days shy of 6 months old.  I’ll have these available in the gallery tomorrow if you’re looking for prints.  If you need to contact me about ordering anything, please don’t hesitate to email me at benjaminbjacobsen (at) gmail.com.

Fools Rules Regatta 2008!

img_9691.jpg

I must admit, I’ve lived in (or very close to) Jamestown since 1991, but I had never been to the Fools Rules Regatta.  I knew about it, I knew Chris Powell was the “chief fool” (he runs the regatta) and I knew the basics.  I’d just always had other commitments the day of the event unfortunately.  Here’s the setup in a nutshell: you have 2 hours to build a “boat” on the Jamestown town beach.  It can be prebuilt, and reassembled.  All materials must be non nautical.  There are 5 basic classes, 1, 2, 3, 4, and unlimited.  They represent the number of people on the boats.  The course is the length of the town beach, and it’s a downwind course.  It’s pretty simple really and a TON of fun.  It’s obvious some people were first timers, and some veterans of the event, but everyone was there to have a great time.  Even watching is a blast.  This is certainly something I’ll be back for next year, and maybe as an entrant.

RI Airshow 2008!

img_0868.jpg

The local RI airshow was this past weekend. It’s basically down the street from my house, so we always go down to the beach to watch. Typically this means we see just the jets, and get a wicked sunburn, but it’s always worth it. Here is a link to the gallery with the images in it.

2008 Bermuda race start!

img_1296.jpg

Made it to Castle Hill to watch the start of the Newport to Bermuda Race. The bay was CROWDED and there were at least 4 helicopters flying. Made for an interesting day to say the least. It’s always fun to see who shows up boat wise for these things, but my highlight was the last start with both Puma and Speedboat on the line together in the open division. I’ve got all the images online in a gallery here if you’d like to buy a print of any of these shots.

Lunar Eclipse!

img_4927.jpg

Awesome lunar eclipse last night.  Went out on the deck and shot a picture every 10 minutes to see the progression.   It was quite cold but I had a great time (I also kept going inside).  I also got the shot on the news which was a nice plus for me:

Fun day in Newport.

img_4741.jpg

Went down to Newport with a group of friends from a photography forum I frequent. We had a great time and I managed to get some shots I’m happy with. We stopped all along Ocean Drive, but my favorite place of the day would have to be Castle Hill. I just love lighthouses and the weather added a new perspective to it. Read more

Trains!

img_2530.jpg

Had some time tonight to get out and shoot some trains. Every since I was a little boy I’ve loved trains. Maybe it’s that we always took the train to NYC to visit my aunt. Maybe it’s because their gigantic (especially back then). I’m not really sure but I’ve always loved them. These are all down around Quonset Point in RI. Enjoy. Read more

Sunset at Narragansett beach

untitled_panorama2.jpg

Went down to Narragansett beach tonight hoping to surf. The waves were a bust but I had my camera with me (I always do) so I went for a lovely walk on the beach and took some panoramic shots. Enjoy.

Welcome to the blog portion of BenJacobsenphoto.com

Well I’ve finally managed to integrate my gallery2 site with a wordpress blog. I was trying to use the plugin that would handle everything for me, but I couldn’t get it working. What I ended up doing is editing the themes I’m using for both the blog and gallery2 so they match. It’s not perfect, and there are still plenty of bugs floating around here, but I think this will be the best answer for me.

I look forward to fine tuning the site, and please, leave comments if you find any issues!

Thanks,

Ben
